Scholarship Details and Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the UBC Rio Tinto Graduate Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• They must be enrolled in or have been accepted into the first year of a Master’s program or the first or second year of a Doctoral program during the 2022-2023 academic year.
• The scholarship is a one-time award and cannot be renewed. Students who have previously received this scholarship are not eligible to apply again.
• Applicants should be engaged in research within the following areas:

Application Process:

Before applying, applicants must check the internal application deadline specific to their graduate program at UBC. It’s crucial to ensure that the application is complete, as incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Required Application Materials:

1. Cover Letter:
   • The cover letter must include essential details such as the student’s name, UBC student number, graduate program, UBC supervisor’s name and the names of referees who will provide letters of recommendation.
   • Only the required information should be included; any additional content will not be considered.
2. Proof of Enrollment or Acceptance:
   • Current UBC students can obtain proof of enrollment via their Student Service Centre (SSC) account, under ‘Grades and Records’ > ‘Proof of Enrollment letters.’
3. Research Project Description:
   • The description should be no longer than four double-spaced pages and must include proposed timelines for the research.
4. Transcripts:
   • For UBC transcripts, a copy of the “Academic History” document provided by the graduate program is acceptable.
   • For transcripts from other institutions, only official copies will be accepted.
   • Transcripts should be recent, ideally from the Summer 2022 term if currently registered or from after the final term if graduated.
   • Each transcript must include a grading key/legend from the respective institution.
   • Transcripts in languages other than English or French must be accompanied by an official English translation.
5. Letters of Recommendation:
   • Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from professors or researchers, with one letter coming from their research supervisor.
6. Curriculum Vitae (CV):
   • An up-to-date CV is required, with no page limit specified.

Presentation Standards:

• All free-form documents must be in a minimum 10-point font.
